Cancer strategy in England: the Cancer Reform Strategy

In 2007 the Government published a new five-year strategy for cancer in England, the Cancer Reform Strategy (CRS). This updated the original Cancer Plan.

Campaign welcomes the publication of the CRS. It is a comprehensive report of how cancer services within England should be designed and reformed to take account of developments in cancer care. These include advancing technologies to aid both the treatment and diagnosis of cancer and the development of new drugs. All of which are a result of successful cancer research.

The report highlights the impact and importance of research and acknowledges that research is a vital element to making progress. Campaign also welcomes the commitment to ensuring that all cancer drugs, wherever possible, are assessed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as soon as they are licensed.

The next and most challenging stage will be the implementation of the CRS. This will involve every element of the NHS and many other organisations working together and prioritising the actions contained in the report.

Campaigning for implementation
Campaign is a member of the Cancer Campaigning Group (CCG), a coalition of 40 national cancer-related charities representing the combined voice of the cancer sector in England. The CCG's aim is to campaign for the continued prioritisation of the prevention, treatment and research of cancers and communicate these messages to both the Government and Parliament.

The CCG was heavily consulted in the creation of the CRS, building on the group’s White Paper that was launched in March 2007. Campaign was represented on the Awareness and Early Detection Working Group that helped its formulation.
